Clare Atwood
Painter and theatre collaborator
Clare Atwood (1866–1962), known as Tony, was a painter whose subjects included women’s wartime labour. She trained seriously and worked professionally, while also contributing to the theatrical world around Edith Craig. In 1916 she joined Craig and Christabel Marshall. Their home at Smallhythe became a place where women’s art and unconventional domestic life could coexist.
