Courtlandt Palmer (pianist)

Courtlandt Palmer’s music survives in manuscript scores, published editions, and concert programs. The New York Public Library’s collection describes a composer working in a Romantic idiom whose music was heard in New York during the early twentieth century. His reputation was stronger among professional colleagues and critics than his present public familiarity suggests.

Born into the wealthy Palmer family, he studied in Italy with Giovanni Sgambati. He also served on the executive committee of the Friends of Music, an organization supporting new American composers. That role places him in the practical work of sustaining other musicians, alongside his own composition and performance.

He was Eva Palmer’s brother. A portrait of their sister May Suydam Palmer at the Metropolitan Museum bears evidence of a gift to him; the museum also holds Albert Herter’s portrait of Courtlandt. The family’s musical and visual records should be read together, without allowing the best-known sibling to absorb the others’ work. [2,3]

His route to Natalie is familial through Eva. Specific correspondence or meetings remain unverified.
