Edith Craig
Theatre director and feminist producer
Edith Craig (1869–1947) made a life in the theatre and insisted that theatre could change the lives of women. The daughter of Ellen Terry, she founded the Pioneer Players in 1911 and brought feminist work to the stage. She also shared her private life with the writer Christabel Marshall and, from 1916, the painter Clare Atwood. At Smallhythe, work, love and household were sustained together.
