23 April 1875 to 6 December 1954, Paris | Writer, aristocrat

Élisabeth de Gramont wrote about a world she had known from within. Her memoir volumes, catalogued under both Gramont and Clermont-Tonnerre, include Au temps des équipages and Les marronniers en fleurs. She also published works on Robert de Montesquiou and Marcel Proust. Her importance includes this record of literary and social observation, not simply her long relationship with Natalie Barney.

Born into the French aristocracy in 1875, she married Philibert de Clermont-Tonnerre and had two daughters. Secondary accounts describe her later support for socialist politics and her reputation as the “red duchess.” The contrast between inherited rank and political commitment is a subject to investigate through her writings and public activities, rather than a ready-made moral transformation.

Her relationship with Barney began around 1909–1910 and continued for decades. Sources disagree on the exact first-meeting chronology. Their reported 1918 agreement also requires examination of the original document before wording or legal significance is attributed to it. Neither the title duchess nor an intimate relationship licenses an invented account of her private reactions to Natalie’s other attachments. [2,3]

Gramont’s books make her a useful witness to changes in elite French life, with the qualifications that any memoir requires. Recollection selects, rearranges, and judges. The original volumes should therefore be read alongside letters and contemporary records.

For the Constellation, she links family rank, literary friendship, political allegiance, and women’s intimate arrangements. Her surname and married title need to be searchable together, while her individual work remains distinct from Natalie’s.
