FROM THE ARCHIVE / RESEARCH & SOURCES

Beyond the introduction

A writer across several circles

Gabriele d’Annunzio (1863–1938) was an Italian poet, novelist and dramatist. His involvement with Romaine Brooks and Ida Rubinstein creates historical connections among personal relationships, performance and visual art. Those connections must not be used to imply he shared every part of Natalie’s social circle.

Where to follow the record

The Archives of American Art’s biographical note on Romaine Brooks discusses her life and associates; the Smithsonian’s Ida Rubinstein portrait record traces the artistic context. His literary and political history requires further specialist research, separately from this relationship atlas.
