Joseph Leiter Jr.

1910 to 1921 | Child of the Leiter family

Joseph Leiter Jr. appears in the public record before he was old enough to control the wealth attached to his name. In March 1913, the Evening Star reported that his grandmother Mary Theresa Carver Leiter had left him $100,000. His brother Thomas received the same amount; their Curzon cousins also appeared among the beneficiaries. The report makes Joseph an individual child within the family, rather than another reference to his father, the financier Joseph Leiter.

Family genealogical accounts identify his mother as Juliette Williams Leiter and give his birth year as 1910. Those details still require confirmation from a contemporary birth or household record. His childhood belonged to the generation through which the Leiter fortune was intended to continue. His grandmother’s will addressed the preservation of capital for descendants, placing children’s futures within arrangements made by adults. [1,2]

Joseph died in January 1921, aged ten. Transcriptions of contemporary newspaper reports describe an accidental discharge of his shotgun while he was duck hunting near his father’s Louisiana lodge at the mouth of the Mississippi. The reported mechanism was uncertain. It would be misleading to supply a precise sequence where the accounts themselves did not establish one. A cemetery register published from St. Paul’s Episcopal Church records gives his burial at Rock Creek Cemetery on 14 January 1921. [3,4]

His place in Natalie’s archive is indirect, through the Leiter family’s Washington world. No meeting with Barney has been established. Joseph had no adult career to recount. His brief life belongs in the Constellation because a family history includes its children, its provision for their futures, and the futures that did not occur.
