Maria “Mimì” Franchetti
Italian baroness; figure in the Capri and Paris artistic circles
Maria “Mimì” Franchetti (1893–1943) was an Italian baroness associated with the international social and artistic circles of Capri and Paris. Contemporary and later accounts place her among the women connected with Natalie Clifford Barney and the pianist Renata Borgatti.
Published accounts describe an intimate relationship between Franchetti and Borgatti around 1918. Franchetti also appears in the record of Barney’s romantic circle. These connections each require their own chronology and sources; a shared circle does not establish a continuous chain of relationships.
Barney’s fiction has been read in relation to Franchetti and Liane de Pougy. A literary identification alone cannot establish every event in the women’s lives. The surviving archive should be read alongside the published accounts before assigning a precise sequence or mutual feelings.
Mimì and Maria Franchetti refer here to the same person. The archive’s AT276 and AT277 names are consolidated as one historical person, with AT276 retained as the source identity for this draft.
