Nancy Lathrop Carver Leiter Campbell
Birth year disputed; died 1930 | Member of the Leiter family and transatlantic household
Nancy Leiter’s clothing survives in the Chicago History Museum’s costume collection. The Museum at FIT identifies her as the daughter of Levi Leiter and the sister of Mary Curzon, and places the surviving garments within a history of Chicago wealth and international society. Objects worn by a person can supply evidence of access, making, and social presentation, even where an independent narrative is still thin.
During a visit to Delhi with Mary, Nancy met Colin Powys Campbell, a British Army officer whom she later married. This family route connects Chicago and Washington to the British administration in India. A complete account should examine the household and her own activities rather than ending with the marriage.
The Leiter estate litigation identifies her as a trustee and names her children. This establishes a public legal role separate from the clothing and the married title. The precise course of her participation needs further examination.
Her connection to Natalie remains contextual through the Leiter family. FIT gives 1872 as her birth year; other sources give 1873. Neither has been silently chosen.
