Samuel Nathan Pike
Businessman, theater patron and Alice’s father
Died 1872 | Businessman and opera-house patron
Samuel Pike’s fortune made art accessible within his household and helped give performance a public place in Cincinnati. He was a whiskey distiller and patron whose opera-house ventures formed part of the city’s theatrical history. Alice Pike Barney grew up with that combination of business money and artistic expenditure.
The Smithsonian’s historical account identifies him as Samuel Nathan Pike. Other sources use Naphtali or Napthali. The inventory preserves those forms rather than producing several men from one probable identity or choosing a spelling merely because it is repeated online. [1,2]
He was Alice’s father and Natalie’s maternal grandfather. His connection to the Constellation runs through the family’s resources and cultural environment. The patronage has an independent history to research through building records, programs, business papers, and contemporary reporting.
