Violet Shillito
Childhood friend and literary-intellectual associate
Death reported in 1901; full dates need verification | Intellectual companion and formative reader
Violet Shillito’s influence is preserved largely through people who remembered learning with her. The Mabel Dodge Luhan House’s account, drawing on Mabel’s memoir, describes the sixteen-year-old Mabel’s 1896 visit to Violet in Paris. Reading and music were central to the visit. Violet appears as a young intellectual companion whose knowledge made other ways of living imaginable to her guest.
That account is useful testimony, but it is retrospective. It should not license a newly invented room, conversation, or motive. Yale’s Mabel Dodge Luhan papers identify a photograph of Violet, offering a separate archival lead for the person behind the recollection.
Violet and Mary Shillito also belonged to Natalie Barney’s early world. Ohio History Connection records their childhood association and their later role in connecting Natalie with Renée Vivien.
Violet’s brief life should not be treated as valuable only because better-known women survived to write about her. Her independent reading, musical activity, and relationships remain research subjects. Full dates and the reported cause of death need contemporary corroboration.
