20 Rue Jacob and the Temple of Friendship

At 20 rue Jacob, a Paris house and garden became associated with Natalie Clifford Barney's gatherings. The Temple of Friendship was a real feature of that setting. Surviving drawings and photographs help us understand the place; they do not tell us everything that happened there.

The garden became a venue for friendship, literary exchange and patronage, but a person’s presence in Natalie’s network is not evidence they stood there. The Constellation therefore uses the Temple as an interpretive center, not an attendance register.
